Post-conflict, the Government of Sri Lanka are now focussing on further development of the economy. The 2011 budget is specifically pro-business growth, and pro-international trade.

GDP grew by 8% in 2010 and is forecast to go higher in 2011.

Substantial investment in major infrastructure projects and industry development by the Government, international development banks, aid agencies and private investors is guaranteed.

SME companies in Sri Lanka are natural partners for UK companies in that they are generally flexible, responsive, innovative businesses, with a focus on niche products and services.

Sri Lanka is an ideal South Asian [SA] logistics hub. Its ease of doing business rankings are the highest in the South Asia region. Furthermore, FTAs with India, Pakistan and other SA neighbours mean that it is, fiscally, an ideal location from which to trade across the region.

The UK and Sri Lanka are trade partners of long standing. The UK is Sri Lanka’s second largest trading partner. There are already over 100 companies with UK affiliations operating in this market.

Literacy levels are the highest in the region. English is the second language and widely spoken.
Key Sectors of Opportunity

Water and wastewater services: widespread requirement for the design and construction of water supply, drainage and waste treatment systems, particularly in urban areas.

Construction: The reconstruction and development of Sri Lanka’s roads and bridges network is well underway but many more opportunities for infrastructure development are due to come online over the coming year.

Marine: Major ports development is underway, with a need for transhipment and cargo handling services, as well as small ports facilities for fishing and leisure marine pursuits.

Energy: Substantial expansion of power generation and distribution planned, along with a shift away from reliance on hydropower towards alternative energy sources.

Education and training: New legislation is due to come into force which will allow private sector higher educational and vocational training providers to establish centres in Sri Lanka. This is a huge opportunity for UK companies who are a preferred partner in this sector.
